What is a steam shower?

A steam shower is a shower that doubles as a steam room.

A steam generator, hidden outside the shower, turns water into steam and sends it into a sealed glass enclosure. You sit on a built-in bench and relax in warm, humid air. When you are done, it works like any other shower.

From the outside, a steam shower looks like a regular glass shower. Inside, the steam fills the space with warm, humid air, like a tropical day.

Steam showers are common in luxury hotels and spas. A home steam shower gives you that experience every morning before work, or every evening after a long day.

How a steam shower works

You start it from a digital control inside the shower. An electric valve fills the steam generator with 1 to 2 gallons of cold water. A heating element brings the water to a boil, much like an electric kettle, and pipes carry the steam into the shower.

The controls cap the steam at about 118°F. The size of the shower and the wall finish decide the size of the generator, so we size it for your room.

A half-hour steam uses about 2 gallons of water. Most regular shower heads use about that much every minute.

What your bathroom needs

Not every bathroom is ready for steam. A steam shower needs three things: full waterproofing behind a sealed enclosure, proper ventilation, and enough space for the generator and a bench.

We check all three at your consultation and tell you if a steam shower is the right fit for your home. Many newer homes in Dallas and Southlake are built with room for one. Most of the steam showers we build go into a master bathroom remodel. How we waterproof a shower

We price your steam shower at the design meeting, with the rest of the remodel, before you commit.

The steam systems we install

We install Mr. Steam systems. The iSteam3 control mounts on the shower wall and sets the temperature and time with a touch. You can also run it from an app on your phone, with saved profiles for each person.

ChromaSteam adds colored light. You can change the color and brightness during your steam, or let the light pulse gently. AromaSteam adds scents like eucalyptus, lavender and mint. A vapor-sealed sound system lets you play music, a meditation or the sounds of nature inside the shower.

We pick the generator, the controls and the extras with you at the design meeting, sized to your shower.

The benefits of a steam shower

A regular shower is a few quick minutes on the way out. A steam shower is time you take for yourself. Most people add steam to relax. Warm, humid air helps tight muscles loosen after a workout or a long day, helps you unwind before bed, and leaves your skin feeling moisturized. Many people also find steam helps them breathe easier when they are congested.
